Contrary to what you may think, loco parentis does NOT refer to “crazy parent.” Loco parentis is the legal statement that when you drop off your child at school or an early childhood center, you are effectively handing them over to a caretaker who will act “in place of a parent.
What’s the Big Deal About Loco Parentis?
Loco parentis would be acceptable if traditional school boards acted in the best interest of our children. Unfortunately, many do not. The main function of government-regulated educational institutions is not to provide an effective education for K-12 students—teaching reading, writing, math, and essential life skills—but to fit children into the government’s societal mould.
Children are often taught to think critically about topics that align with governmental ideals, particularly liberal ideologies. If your child thinks differently about certain social trends or reforms, they may face correction, criticism, or even shaming.
The original standard of loco parentis, where teachers were responsible for nurturing and educating children with the same care as a parent, has diminished significantly.
Modern Loco Parentis
Recent strikes in Ontario involving educators and school administrators have raised questions about how much of this disruption benefits students. This school year, once again, has been disrupted—not by COVID, but by financial issues. There never seems to be enough money, and if it means putting children’s education on hold, many institutions seem willing to do so.
Furthermore, in public school systems, children are often taught curriculums that may conflict with their family's beliefs. Many students are advanced through grades without a solid grasp of literacy, mathematics, or science, which should raise more than a few eyebrows.
Every school year, public school systems advertise their institutions as the best choice for your children, promising brighter futures and employability. Yet they call for enrollments even when strikes are looming. Students are guided into outdated programs with limited job opportunities, while fundamental life skills take a backseat to political agendas. Classrooms often contain more students than one teacher can manage, especially when students with behavioral needs or physical disabilities require one-on-one support.
Despite these challenges, the public school system still claims to be the best educational institution for your children, suggesting that it fulfills the responsibility of teaching to the same standard that you would as a parent.
Remember This
Whenever you question traditional schooling or feel intimidated by enrolling your child in government schools, remember this crucial truth: school teachers and administrators are serving the parents, not the other way around.
As a parent or caretaker, you have every right to investigate what your child is learning and question its appropriateness. You can decide if their education aligns with their needs and interests.
Did I mention you can revoke loco parentis for your child at school? While it may require some effort, it’s an option worth exploring.
The current school curriculum often follows a one-size-fits-all approach, failing to cater to the unique strengths, weaknesses, interests, and potential of each child. Standardized tests and complicated exams cannot measure a child's full potential.
Who knows your child's capabilities best? You—the primary caregiver—have the most profound understanding of your child's unique potential. Fight for their needs, because every child deserves someone who genuinely has their best interests at heart.
